UAE Golden Visa

If you are planning to leave UAE permanently and have a residence visa, then it has to be canceled. It has to be done by the sponsor on your behalf and the process is pretty straightforward. While your sponsor handles most of the work, it is important to ensure everything goes smoothly.

Who can cancel?

A visa has to be canceled by the company or individual who sponsored your residence visa. So, you cannot apply for visa cancellation on your own. However, if you have an investor visa, you can do the process on your own. You have thirty days to leave the country once your visa is canceled.

It is important to settle all your dues before initiating the visa cancellation process such as paying off any debts, canceling your tenancy contract, selling your car, closing your bank account, paying utility bills, and so on.

How to cancel?

-If you are employed, then your company or employer will first cancel the work permit (labour card) and work contract from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). Your employer can apply online and attach all the necessary documents electronically. Once the Ministry approves the application and permanently cancels your work permit, they will forward the application to the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) who will then cancel your residence visa permanently.

Please note: Along with work permit cancellation, the employer will submit a letter stating you have received all benefits, settlements, and wages that are due. You need to make sure you receive all your dues from your employer before signing any confirmation letter.

-If you wish to switch jobs, then you will not leave the country. The employer will only cancel your work permit. It is advisable to stay for a minimum of two years with your employer as your work contract will end. If it is not over, then you need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your current employer

to transfer sponsorship to your new employer. If your current employer does not agree to the premature termination of your contract, then you can face an employment ban for about six months to one year. If they do sign the NOC and cancel your work permit, then you need to hand over your cancellation paper to your new employer who will process a new work permit on your behalf.

-If you have sponsored your family members, then it is important to cancel their residence visa before your employer cancels your visa. However, if you are only changing jobs, then there is no need to cancel their visa.

-If you are on a partner or investor visa, then all you need is a NOC from your local sponsor and your sponsor’s Emirates ID. You will also need to clear all your outstanding dues with the bank.

-Your residence visa will be automatically canceled if you stay outside the UAE for more than six months. If you wish to come back, you will need to re-apply for an entry permit. Keep in mind, if you do not formally resign and leave the country without informing your employer, they have the right to report you as absconding and you can face legal consequences if you wish to re-enter the UAE later on.

Where to cancel?

You can apply for cancellation in two ways:

  1. Visiting a registered typing centre-They will help initiate the process with the GDRFA. Once you get the visa cancellation form, sign it and hand it over to your sponsor. If you are unavailable, then your sponsor will request for cancellation on your behalf.
  2. Online- you can also submit a cancellation request online by visiting the GDRFA website. But you will need to visit the GDRFA office with your passport and Emirates ID to complete the cancellation process.

What are the documents required?

Passport copies of sponsor

Original Emirates ID, passport, and visa copy of the individual wishing to cancel the visa

-A clearance statement regarding all financial liabilities

-Approval from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) and cancellation form signed and sealed by the company (this applies if your sponsor is your employer).

Cost and duration of Visa cancellation-

The cost for visa cancellation in the UAE may differ from person to person. It is generally between AED 100 – AED 200. Your sponsor will be in charge of bearing the cost of visa cancellation. It does not take very long for a visa to get canceled and may take up to one or two working days. If you have to cancel your labor card, then it may take up to one or three working days in total. You have a grace period of thirty days once your visa gets canceled. After this, you will need to exit the country or apply for another visa.
